"Nunavut" means "Our Land" in Inuktitut.

Nunavut become a territory April 1, 1999, the first new territory since Newfoundland joined the Canadian federation in 1949.

The Nunavut area covers almost 1/3 of Canada and is almost entirely above the tree line. It is 2 million square kilometres of land, bigger than Alaska, with 26,000 people living in 28 isolated towns in a region of tundra, pine forest, and ice fields straddling the Arctic Circle. Approximately 18,000 residence are Inuit.

The Capital is Iqaluit, formerly called Frobisher Bay. Official languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Innuinaqtun, English and French.
