Six Virginia Tribes Seek Federal Recognition

A federal bill to recognize six tribes in Virginia has passed the U.S. House of Representative and is pending Senate approval.

Chief Ken Adams of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe explained "What it does for us is puts us on an even playing field with 562 tribes across the nation that have federal recognition." He believes federal recognition will provide economic, education, and other opportunities. "What is really important is that the Virginia tribes have the same relationship with the federal government that other tribes across the land do. It's a matter of equality,"

Virginia Chairman of Public Policy, Al Weed, said "They deserve equal standing with all the other Indian nations because they were so key to the success of the first European colony at James Town."

Supporters of the bill include Senator Jim Webb, Opposition comes from groups with concerns the recognition will be followed by Indian casinos in Virginia.
