SAN DIEGO - The Viejas Casino will host California's largest BBQ cooking
championship again this year from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, October 17 in the
Viejas Outlet Center Parking lot, directly across from the casino. The event and
parking are free to the public.
This is the fifth year for the "Smokin' in the Park" BBQ Championship & Festival
which will feature more than 60 teams competing for $23,000 in cash and prizes.
The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS).
The teams will be judged in four meat categories; chicken, pork shoulder, beef
brisket and pork spareribs. Cooking begins on Friday night at 10 p.m.
and judging begins at noon on Saturday. Winnes will be announced at 4 p.m.
Sample BBQ plates will be sold to attendees who can then vote for their favoite
as the People's Choice Award. The Grand Champion winner will advance to the 22nd
Annual Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational in 2010.
The festival includes multiple beer gardens with craft beers, a kids play area,
and two stages of live entertainment featuring Los Lobos, The Texas Tornados and
many others.
