Tribes disagree over proposed casino
September 23 2008
North Battleford continues to be in the middle of the controversy between the
Battlefords Tribal Council (BTC), and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian
Nations (FSIN). The BTC is claiming the right to build a multimillion dollar
casino while the FSIN is trying to stop them.
The financing for the casino is in place. The BTC also has permission from the
city of North Battleford to build there. The plan is to build the new casino
next to the existing casino, which is owned by the tribe but operated by the
Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA).
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations intends to stop the Battlefords
Tribal Council from building.
A final decision will be made at the next SIGA board meeting. That is when the
11 member board will discuss who will have the right to build and control the
new casino.
