southeastern Massachusetts has been granted approval to begin the application processes for casino licenses. The state's gaming commission gave the approval for commercial developers to apply for the licenses. Previously, only an Native American federally recognized tribe was allowed to operate the area casino.

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has been struggling to get the Taunton casino approved. The tribe has had many set backs in the planning and approval process. Part of the issues have been with the location of the casino. The proposed land must first be put into trust.

Even with the obstacles that have been presented, they plan to still continue to perusing the project.

The gaming commission approved the vote for commercial developers unanimously. However, if the Mashpee are able to achieve the recruitments for their casino, the gaming commission could still give the license to the tribe and not the commercial developers.
