August 26, 2008 BUFFALO, NY - Federal Judge William Skretny today reinforced his ruling of July 8th that gambling at the Buffalo Creek Casino is illegal and called for the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) to enforce the law and close the casino. A remand motion by the federal government to transfer the case to the NIGC was denied. The judge did not say the temporary casino must close immediately, but did say he would not take another look at the motions. Seneca Nations officials expect the U.S. Justice Department to file an expedited appeal. In a statement from Maurice John Sr., president of the Seneca Nation, "This is a lengthy and involved process and we are a patient people who have lived on our native land for hundreds of years. We remain optimistic that we will prevail on appeal." Return to New York Casinos. |
