Chickasaw Nation to purchase Remington Park
August 14, 2009
Oklahoma City - The Chickasaw Nation has reportedly agreed in principle to
purchase Remington Park, the largest racetrack in Oklahoma.
Remington was built by DeBartolo Racing and opened in September of 1988. The
current owner is Magna Entertainment Corporation (MEC), which is in bankruptcy,
forcing an auction Remington to pay the company's creditors.
The track has shown a profit over the last several years. Remington became a "racino"
in November 2005 when it opened its casino. This is one of three in Oklahoma.
The Choctaw tribe owns the other two, Will Rogers Downs in Claremore and Blue
Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw.
The auction for Remington Park closed in July, and the bankruptcy court will
have to give final approval of any sales agreement. The earliest approval would
be in September.
The Chickasaws currently operate more than a dozen casinos, gaming centers, or
travel stops in Oklahoma. These include Winstar World Casino near the Texas
border, Riverwind Casino in Norman, the Ada Gaming Center, and the Newcastle
Gaming Center in the Oklahoma City area.
