SugarHouse Casino Receives Casino License

January 12, 2008

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board issued a gambling license yesterday for the planned SugarHouse Casino.  The license was issued specdifically to the current site and SugarHouse would be able to request a new site.

CASINO STATUS

  • Last week the city of Fishtown granted permission to SugarHouse to clear 22-acres on the Delaware River banks where the casino will be built.
  • The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission opposes construction of the casino until the site has been excavated for evidence of an English fort from the Revolutionary War era or possibly a Native American village.
  • Unhappy neighborhood protesters plan to demonstrate against casino investors.
  • A lawsuit has been filed by 7 legislators for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to decide whether the city had the right to grant ownership of riverside, or riparian, lands to SugarHouse.
