Reading-area hotel seeks license for 500 slots

July 22, 2009

READING, PA - Wyo Gaming is seeking a state license to operate 500 slot machines on a 12,000-square-foot gambling floor inside the Crowne Plaza Reading hotel, located in the Berks County borough of Wyomissing. The upscale hotel is located on Route 222 near Reading and about 30 miles northeast of Lancaster.

"Reading is a little bit of a surprise to observers, but people who have been looking at gaming from a business perspective have known about Reading for a while," said Kevin Feeley, a spokesman for Wyo Gaming. "Reading is itself a destination - whether it's the Jazz Fest, the Reading Phillies or the outlets. The region is a place that is drawing more and more interest as a destination." He said the casino could open six to nine months if approved.

Doug Harbach, a spokesman for the state Gaming Control Board, confirmed an application has been received from Wyo Gaming but could not estimate when the board would make a decision. "It can be anywhere from six months up to a year," he said. "A lot of it depends on how complete the application is.
