The Thoroughbred Times conducted a recent study which determined that Presque
Isle Downs & Casino is one of the safest race tracks in the nation for horses to
Presque Isle Downs & Casino scored a rate of 0.94 injury incidents per 1000
starts which is far below the industry standard of 3.29 per 1000 starts during
the same 2009-2011 time period.
“On our Tapeta track there were 6600 runners in 800 races in 2011 and only 2
catastrophic breakdowns, which makes it one of the safest tracks in the United
States,” said Mike Tamburelli, VP and General Manager. “That tells you
something. That tells you that the track is safe. That we are dedicated to
ensuring the safety of the horses and that we have the personnel that know how
to offer a stellar product without compromising the safety of the horses and
Tapeta is a synthetic surface consisting of sand, fiber, rubber and a unique
brand of wax.
Currently only four racetracks around the world feature the Tapeta surface:
Tapeta Park in Tasmania, Meydan in Dubai UAE, Golden Gate Fields in Northern
California and Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania.
“The philosophy was we wanted a surface that was fast but safe. We wanted to
offer great racing featuring some of the best horses in the nation and we wanted
to offer it in the safest possible format,” said Debbie Howells, Presque Isle
Downs & Casino Racing Director.
Tracks that have switched their main tracks from dirt to synthetic surfaces have
fared significantly better in their accident rates than other tracks according
to the study.
“This is a family friendly event,” said Tamburelli. “We have a lot of children
and young people who come here to watch the horses run. Unfortunately it is part
of life that accidents occur and horse racing is no exception, so we are very
proud to offer the safest racing in the nation.”
Live racing at Presque Isle Downs & Casino runs from May 15, 2012 until
September 29, 2012. Post times are Tuesday through Saturday at 5:25 pm EST.
