The Twin River Management is proposing a change to their casino. The proposal was presented to the Tiverton town council. The plan calls for the Newport Grand casino to be relocated from Newport and expanded. The project could employee hundreds of people and the town could earn millions in tax revenue.
On Monday John Taylor, the Chairman for TRMG, presented the proposed casino to the town council. The casino would be built north of the town and close to the Massachusetts border. The property is 45 acres large.
The public was not allowed to comment during the meeting. However, TRMG will hold smaller meetings for the public in the future.
$30 million is paid to the state by the current Newport Grand. If the casino is allowed to move, the new larger location would operate 30 gaming tables and 1,100 slot machines.
In September, three meetings will be held in order to discuss the final plans off the proposed project.
If approved, the casino could pay Tiverton $400 million from taxes. 350 to 400 new jobs would be created. Security related jobs would account for 100 of those positions. 160 jobs would also transfer from the Newport location.
