RI Voters to Decide on Tiverton Casino

March 04, 2016

On Friday Gov. Gina Raimondo approved the measure that will allow state voters to decide on the proposed Tiverton casino. The measure will be placed on the ballot for this November.

The proposed casino location will be near the Massachusetts boarder.

The group that operates the Twin River Casino in Newport has requested to close the location and move to a new location in Tiverton. In order for that to happen, the license would have to be transferred to the new location by permission of the town residents and the state.

On Wednesday the House approved the measure 69 to 4. Then on Thursday, the Senate voted with approval with a vote of 33 to 2. The governor was then sent the bill and she signed it the following day.

If the bill is approved by voters in November, 61 percent of gaming revenue and 15.5 percent of table game revenue will be paid to the state. $3 million a year will be paid to the host city of Tiverton.
