January 28, 2010 ![]() FERNDALE, WA – Lummi Nation is installing a huge LED sign along Interstate 5 at Slater Road to advertise their Silver Reef Hotel, Casino and Spa. The 14 feet by 48 feet sign is expected to become a landmark for Ferndale. The sign is within Ferndale city limits and the marquee underneath it says "Welcome to Ferndale." "It's a real gateway into the Lummi Nation and the city of Ferndale," said Raynell Zuni, general manager of the tribe's Lummi Commercial Co. The sign also advertises a new tribal smoke shop and there is also rental space for other businesses to advertise by phoning 758-4223. Ferndale City Administrator Greg Young said "We figured it was better to work cooperatively with the Lummis rather than try to oppose it. I haven't really heard from anyone, but I'm not really sure what the level of attention is out there." Dustin Terpening, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Transportation, said the sign exceeds state law but is not under state jurisdiction since it is located on tribal land.
