Vallejo Casino Overview
The Vallejo casino project proposed by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians would cost $700 million to build. The project would include a casino, hotel, spa, restaurants, and a family entertainment center with a movie theater, arcade, and a bowling alley. See news video of casino plan.

Location
If approved, the Vallejo casino resort would be built on a 128-acre site near I-80 and Highway 37.

Federal Approval
The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians are seeking approval from the U.S. Department of Interior. In January 2016 the Tribe filed an application with the Department in January 2016 requesting the 128-acre site be transferred into federal trust for reservation status. In August 2016 the Tribe filed a second application with the Department to build a casino on that land.

Casino Status

2016
The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians filed two applications with the U.S. Department of Interior in 2016 for the purpose of establishing reservation land, and secondly, for approval to build a casino on that land.

2019
Both applications were rejected by Interior Department on Feb. 7, 2019. The Tribe reacted to the decisions by filing a case against the Interior Department in the United States District Court, District of Columbia.

2022
In Sep. 2022 the U.S. Circuit Court agreed with the tribe's claim of ancestral ties to the Vallejo area, and ordered the Interior Department to revisit the tribe's casino applications again and reconsider the "inescapable" facts supporting the tribe's ancestral ties to the Vallejo area.

2023
There were no news updates in 2023 from the Interior Department regarding a second review of the Vallejo casino applications.

2024
In early 2024 the Interior Department instructed the director of the Pacific Regional Office of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to review the Vallejo casino applications. The review could lead to an environment impact study, which would be a big step forward in the approval process.

Vallejo Casino Status | April 2024 Update

The U.S. Department of Interior is taking another look at the 2016 applications for a Vallejo casino resort filed by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians. The first application seeks to establish 128 acres of reservation land in Vallejo, and the second seeks approval to build a casino on that land.

Both applications were rejected by the Department of Interior in 2019. The Tribe challenged the decision by filing its objections in the United States District Court District of Columbia. The District Court agreed with the Tribe and order the Department of Interior to perform a second review of the applications.

Last month the Interior Department contacted the director of the Pacific Regional Office of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and requested another review the Vallejo casino applications.

The new review could lead to discussions between the Pacific Regional Office and the Tribe, as an early step in the federal process to evaluate the environmental impact of the casino. The Tribe is hoping additional steps will follow and eventually lead to federal approval.

Vallejo Casino proposal is revived by DC Court

October 12, 2022

The possibility of building the Vallejo casino proposed by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians in 2016, and rejected by the US Department of Interior in 2019, has been revived by the US District Court in DC.

In a Sep. 30th ruling, the Court agreed with the tribe's claim of ancestral ties to the Vallejo area and ordered the Interior Department to reopen the tribe's casino application and reconsider the "inescapable" historical evidence supporting the homeland claims of the Scotts Valley Indians.

The future of the tribe's Vallejo Casino is now pending with the U.S. Department of Interior. No timeline for a decision has been announced.
