New Warm Springs Casino may be blocked from opening

June 12, 2022

The newly constructed Warm Springs Casino in Anadarko may be blocked from opening by a lawsuit filed by two tribes with nearby casinos. The Warm Springs casino is located 10 miles from Kiowa Casino at Verden owned by the Kiowa Nation and 28 miles from Comanche Spur Casino at Elgin owned by the Comanche Nation.

The Kiowa and Comanche nations filed a lawsuit on May 24 in the federal court claiming the Fort Sill Apache had no legal rights to the land used to build the Warm Springs Casino. Instead, the Kiowa Nation claims the land was promised to it in an 1867 treaty.

The two tribes asked the federal court for the Western District of Oklahoma for a temporary restraining order to stop Warm Springs Casino from opening. The request was denied last week; however, the court recognized the need to continue the case. The tribes are now asking for a preliminary injunction to stop the opening.

The final outcome of this lawsuit remains pending.
