An announcement was made on Thursday that land in Mashpee and Taunton has been officially placed into trust by the federal government for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

With the land placed into trust, the tribe may now begin developing it for economic purposes.

151 acres were bought by the tribe in Taunton. The property will be used for the new Project First Light Resort and Casino.

171 acres were also purchased in Mashpee.

A debate has been ongoing by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission over potentially allowing for an additional casino license for the southeastern section of the state.

Mass Gaming & Entertainment has proposed a casino project in Brockton that would cost $667 million. The company believes that the tribal casino would not be an issue for them. However the commission is uncertain.

Under the state and tribal gaming compact, if a commercial casino is built in the same gaming region as the tribal casino, then the tribe is exempt from paying taxes to the state. Otherwise, 17% will be paid to the state.
