A $300 million project has been approved for construction of five new casinos to be built on the Navajo reservation. The plan calls for 2 large scale casinos and 3 smaller casinos. Two of the planned casinos will be built in San Juan County. Upper Fruitland will build an $80 million gaming facility. A smaller $5 million gaming facility will be built in Hogback.

The financial plans were approved last week by the Navajo Tribal Council's Budget and Finance Committee. The tribe is required to submit reports on profits and have audits overseen by gaming offices. Immediate gaming jurisdictions made under the Navajo Regulatory Office. Then the state. Followed then by the state and federal Indian Gaming commissions.

2,000 new permanent jobs are expected to be generated from the five casino operations. 90% percent of those employees are expected to be Navajo. Upper Fruitland will host 400 new jobs. Thousands of temporary jobs are also expected to be developed for the construction of the casinos. 60% of the construction jobs are expected to be Navajo.

The ground breaking is scheduled for this year for Upper Fruitland and Hogback. October 2011 is the scheduled date for the Hogback casino opening. The Tribe hopes to have the Upper Fruitland casino operating also by October 2011.
