An announcement was made on Wednesday by the Laguna Pueblo in support of the proposed gaming compact that would involve Native American tribes and the state of New Mexico. Originally the tribe was against the compact believing that it would over saturate the state's gaming market.

On Saturday the Legislature's Committee on Compacts met. David Martinez, the Laguna Lt. Governor, spoke about his tribes objection to the compact.

If approved, tribes with over 75,000 members could build a new casino within six years. This only applies to the Navajo Nation.

The meeting was nine hours long.

The Laguna Pueblo believe that the proposed compact is stronger than the previously proposed ones that the tribe opposed. The new compact also addresses concerns that the state's tribes had in 2013 and 2014.

Three casinos are operated by the Laguna. Just east of Grants there is The Dancing Eagle Casino. Also located west of Albuquerque, the Route 66 Casino and Route 66 Casino Express.

The Senate will now decide on the compact. If approved the House vote will be the next step. If both approve, then Gov. Susana Martinez will sign off on it. The last step would be approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior.
