A lawsuit that was filed in September by three Newport residents has received support from the city council. The lawsuit is due to the residents believing that the Newport Grand expansion is unconstitutional.
The General Assembly added a referendum to the November ballot asking voters to approve casino gaming expansion to table games state wide. The issue is Question 1 on the ballot. If the measure is approved by voters, the Newport Grand would also be allowed to operate table games.
The lawsuit is an effort to halt the referendum from allowing the expanded gaming in Newport.
Ballots cast from Newport area residents will be counted separately from other voters in the state. Before the matter can go into effect, it must be approved statewide as well as in Newport.
