Overview

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in the San Gorgonio Pass area ofRiverside County. The tribe operates a strong government with programs supporting education, health, culturalpreservation, and economic development. Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is one of the largest gaming and hospitalityenterprises in California and supports tribal services and community programs.

Membership

The tribe has approximately 1,000 enrolled members. Membership is based on lineal descent and governed by thetribe's enrollment ordinance.

Brief History

The Morongo people are part of the Cahuilla and Serrano peoples whose ancestral territory spans the inlandvalleys and mountains of Southern California. The Morongo Reservation was established in 1865, making it one ofthe oldest reservations in the state. The tribe has played a major role in the development of tribal gamingrights, including participation in the landmark 1987 Cabazon decision that affirmed tribal sovereignty in gaming.
