San Manuel Band of Mission Indians>
The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, also known as the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, is a federally recognizedSerrano tribe located in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains. The tribe operates a strong sovereign governmentwith programs supporting education, health, cultural preservation, and economic development. Yaamava' Resort & Casinois one of the largest gaming operations in the United States and serves as the tribe's primary economic enterprise.
The tribe has an enrolled membership of approximately 200 citizens. Membership is based on lineal descent and governedby the tribe's enrollment policies and constitution.
The Yuhaaviatam people are part of the Serrano, whose ancestral territory spans the San Bernardino Mountains andsurrounding valleys. The tribe survived missionization, displacement, and the 1866 massacre that devastated thecommunity. The San Manuel Reservation was established in 1891. Over the past several decades, the tribe has rebuiltits government, strengthened cultural programs, and developed major economic enterprises that support long-termcommunity stability.
