The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) last week announced plans to develop a casino in southwestern Virginia. The tribe has partnered with Steve Johnson, the developer of a 350-acre tract known as The Pinnacle.

The plan includes the casino with a 150-room hotel, a 15,000-seat outdoor concert venue, a mountain coaster, and an indoor water park.
The Cherokee (EBCI) currently own two casinos in North Carolina - Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee and the Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel in Murphy. The tribe's ancestral lands include the site for the proposed casino.
Cherokee Chief Sneed described the tribe's agreement with Steve Johnson this way:
"Right now, it's just a simple agreement. We're not bound by anything. All the agreement says is that we're going to work together to try to win a gaming license. If we are successful in that, we will place a casino resort on the property at The Pinnacle."
"There is a bill (Virginia Senate Bill No. 743) moving through the Virginia legislature right now for commercial gaming. In the initial draft of the bill, they had designated certain cities. They wanted to put casinos in cities that were economically-challenged or economically-depressed - in need of a shot in the arm."
The Pinnacle casino project will seek a commercial gaming license under the pending Virginia legislation. It will not pursue an Indian gaming casino under the U.S. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
