The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, which owns and operates the Miccosukee Casino Resort in western Miami, has purchased 25 acres of land in DeFuniak Springs in Walton County in the Florida Panhandle. The land is located between DeFuniak Springs and Freeport along Highway 331.
This new tribal acquisition is considered "off-reservation land". The tribe may file a land into trust application with the U.S. Department of Interior to convert it into sovereign tribal land, similar to reservation land. Tribal land that is transferred into federal trust can qualify casino gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).
It is unclear what the future development of the property will be. So far, the Miccosukee Tribe has not announced any plans for the land, and has not applied for any local building permits. The official recording date of the land purchase was January 5, 2026.
If the tribe files a land into trust application with the Interior Department, then it is very likely the long-term plan is to build the first-ever casino in the Florida Panhandle.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians have begun a major expansion project of the Miccosukee Casino & Resort located in western Miami, Florida. A groundbreaking ceremony was held October 23 to kick off this $40 million project to transform and upgrade this property. This is the next step in a multi-phase master plan to add more hospitality features that enhance the guest experience.
The new features in this phase will include a resort-style pool, a lazy river, and a multi-purpose entertainment facility.

Our tribe continues to invest in the community and our people - creating new ways for guests to experience our hospitality, culture, and entertainment. These projects represent progress, pride, and the next step in a much larger vision for Miccosukee's future."

The Miccosukee Tribe has contracted with several partners to manage and implement the project. Dade Construction Corp. is the general contractor. Arcadis is a consultancy firm leading the master planning and infrastructure design. Martin Aquatic is an aquatic design and engineering firm managing the lazy river and aquatic systems projects. And, EDSA is a landscape architecture designing the outdoor environment and resort amenities.
Construction will continue through 2026 and 2027. No final completion date has been announced.
