Moorhead Casino Project Paused for Tribal Review

Interstate 94 and State Highway 336
Moorhead, MN

The White Earth Nation has paused its proposed $176 million Moorhead casino and hotel development as newly elected leadership conducts a full review of the project's financial, operational, and community impacts. The tribe continues to own the site and has not withdrawn any federal filings while the reassessment is underway.

Overview

The White Earth Nation has placed its proposed $176 million Moorhead casino and hotel development on hold as newly elected leadership conducts a deeper review of the project's financial, operational, and community impacts. Secretary-Treasurer Jacob McArthur announced the pause in June 2026, stating that the tribe must fully evaluate long-term financial risk, potential impacts on existing White Earth gaming operations, and community feedback before moving forward.

The project remains formally proposed, and the tribe continues to own the nearly 300-acre site purchased in 2024. All previously completed studies - including the economic and social impact analysis outlining 950 slot machines, 10 table games, a 200-room hotel, restaurants, retail, and a 50-pad RV park - remain valid. No federal trust filings or state-level processes have been withdrawn.

Key regulatory steps still lie ahead, including federal trust acquisition and state gaming compact negotiations. Environmental considerations, particularly protection of the regional aquifer, also remain central to the review.

While the project is paused, it has not been canceled. Tribal leaders are expected to revisit the proposal later in 2026 after completing additional financial and operational analysis. The outcome may include moving forward as planned, redesigning the project, or extending the pause.
