White Earth Nation Plans New Casino

White Earth Nation has purchased land near Moorhead in Clay County, MN, where it plans to build a casino and convention center. The land is 280.64 acres is located near Interstate 94 and State Highway 336. It was purchased by the tribe on December 16, 2024 for $3.9 million.

There have been no details released yet about the casino plans or its timeframe. The information about the land purchase was reported by Flag Family Media.

It is expected that White Earth Nation will seek federal approval to build the casino. After the casino plans are completed, the tribe must submit an official application to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), an agency within the Department of Interior, to request the 280.64-acre casino site be transferred into federal trust for the purpose of gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The federal approval process typically takes 2 or more years before a decision. Since the land was acquired by the tribe after 1988, the Secretary of the Interior is required to get consent for the casino from the Minnesota governor and local government officials.

Moorhead is the county seat of Clay County and the largest city in northwest Minnesota. Moorhead is located just one mile from neighboring Fargo, ND.

White Earth Nation is headquartered in Mahnomen MN. The tribe owns Shooting Star Casino Hotel in Mahnomen and Shooting Star Casino Bagley between Ebro and Bagley, MN. The tribe also owns Waabigwan Mashkiki, a cannabis grower and processor with dispensaries located statewide.
