Before the Irving City Council voted this week on rezoning 1,000 acres of vacant land around the site of the former Texas Stadium to allow construction of a destination casino resort, the Sands Corp. withdrew the controversial casino component from their proposal.

The city council approved the Sands proposal for a destination resort on March 17. The proposal did not include a casino. Instead, the proposal was limited to a hotel with 1,750 rooms, restaurants, retail stores, a concert theater with 4,000 seats, and a sports arena with 15,000 seats. Sands withdrew the casino component from their plan due to strong citizen opposition and a decision to wait for a more opportune time in the casino controversy.

In Texas, the Irving planning and zoning commission met last night and narrowly approved a rezoning ordinance to allow a casino resort to be developed off Highway 114 at the site of the former Texas Stadium. The casino is contingent upon a constitutional amendment to legalize gambling.

The commission's 8-hour meeting ran late into the night and ended at 2:30 am this morning. The final vote to approve the resort and casino was 5-4.
Prior to the vote, the commission heard from local residents who support the casino project and from others that oppose it. The opposition expressed strong concerns about the negative effects on the residents, such as property values, traffic and crime.
