From a $965 million acquisition in 2007 to multibillion-dollar casino resorts in Las Vegas, New York, California and Puerto Rico, Hard Rock International has become a powerful platform for Seminole tribal enterprise.

In 2007, the Seminole Tribe of Florida made a bold $965 million bet on Hard Rock International. Nearly two decades later, that acquisition has become a global platform for tribal enterprise, placing the Seminoles behind some of the most ambitious casino and resort developments in America, from Hard Rock Casino Tejon in California and a new Guitar Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip to the massive Metropolitan Park project in New York.
The scale is striking. Hard Rock's current major development portfolio includes the $600 million Tejon project, a reported $4 billion to $5 billion transformation of the former Mirage in Las Vegas, the approximately $8 billion Metropolitan Park development in Queens and an $850 million resort planned for San Juan, Puerto Rico. Combined, the projects represent roughly $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion in announced or reported development value, although Hard Rock is not the sole developer or source of investment in every project.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida completed its $965 million purchase of Hard Rock International from Britain's Rank Group on March 5, 2007. The acquisition included 124 Hard Rock Cafes, five hotels, two casino hotels, two Hard Rock Live venues and approximately 70,000 pieces of music memorabilia.
For the Seminoles, the deal represented far more than the purchase of a famous restaurant brand. It provided an international hospitality platform and a means of diversifying beyond the Tribe's Florida gaming operations.
At the time, Seminole Vice Chairman Moses Osceola said the acquisition made the Tribe's "economic survival a little bit more sure."
Today's casino development pipeline demonstrates how consequential that decision became.
Hard Rock Casino Tejon, developed with the Tejon Indian Tribe, opened in November 2025 as the first full-scale gaming and entertainment property in Kern County. Hard Rock describes it as a $600 million multiphase investment.
A future phase is planned to add a 400-room hotel, additional dining, pool and spa facilities and a 2,800-seat Hard Rock Live entertainment venue.
For Indian Country, Tejon illustrates a noteworthy evolution of tribal gaming: an international casino and hospitality company owned by one Native American tribe partnering with another tribe to develop and operate a major gaming destination.

The most visible demonstration of Hard Rock's growth is rising on the Las Vegas Strip.
Hard Rock International acquired the Mirage operations from MGM Resorts International for $1 billion in December 2022. The Mirage closed in July 2024 for redevelopment into Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas.
The centerpiece is a guitar-shaped hotel tower that topped out in 2026. The completed resort is planned with more than 3,700 hotel rooms, approximately 175,000 square feet of gaming space and more than 200,000 square feet of meeting space. The redevelopment is expected to cost between $4 billion and $5 billion and open in 2027.
Few developments better demonstrate how far Seminole gaming has traveled. A Native American-owned enterprise is creating one of the Las Vegas Strip's next defining landmarks.

Hard Rock's biggest current development opportunity is Metropolitan Park, the approximately $8 billion sports, entertainment and gaming district planned with New York Mets owner Steve Cohen around Citi Field in Queens.
Plans call for a Hard Rock casino and hotel, restaurants, retail, convention and entertainment facilities, along with 25 acres of publicly accessible parkland. Construction preparation began around Citi Field in February 2026.
The project provides perhaps the clearest measure of how dramatically Hard Rock's role has expanded since the Seminoles acquired the company.

The pipeline is expanding again. In February 2026, Hard Rock International announced an $850 million Hard Rock Hotel & Casino San Juan in partnership with Misla Hospitality, Stonecrest Investment Management and The Interfin Companies.
Scheduled to open in 2029, plans include approximately 415 rooms, 58 suites, 186 branded residences, a casino, entertainment venues, restaurants and a recording studio.
For the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Hard Rock's importance extends beyond new resorts.
When the acquisition closed in 2007, contemporary reporting said tribal members received monthly distributions from business operations, while revenues also supported education, health care and other tribal services. Current published estimates place Seminole enrollment at approximately 4,300 members, although a current official per-capita distribution amount is not publicly established.
The economic impact of Hard Rock ownership therefore extends beyond individual distributions. The enterprise supports the broader goal that Seminole leaders identified nearly two decades ago: economic diversification and greater long-term financial security for the Tribe.
Nearly two decades after the Seminoles' $965 million acquisition, Hard Rock has become something much larger than a diversification strategy.
In California, its Hard Rock organization is partnering with another Native American tribe. In Las Vegas, it is transforming one of the Strip's most famous casino sites. In New York, Hard Rock is participating in an approximately $8 billion sports and entertainment district. And in Puerto Rico, another $850 million resort is planned for 2029.
The $965 million acquisition that once represented a bold step beyond the Seminoles' Florida gaming operations has become a global development platform, giving a Native American nation a prominent role in some of the gaming and hospitality industry's most ambitious new destinations.
