Alaska's gambling laws are very restrictive and have been since its 1959 statehood when its first constitution banned all commercial gambling. Alaska only allows limited tribal gaming, charitable gaming, social gambling, and dog-sled betting.
Tribal gaming in Alaska is limited to Class II gaming only. Class II is defined by the U.S. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) as "non-house banked" gaming. Jackpots are paid from a player pool and not the house. Class II games include bingo, non-house-banked card games, pull-tabs, punch boards, and games similar to bingo. Electronic gaming machines that look like slot machines but pay from player funds are also Class II.
Federal Recognition
The United States grants formal recognition to native tribes for the purpose of providing federal services, funding and tribal sovereignty. Alaska has 229 federally-recognized tribes compared to 345 federally-recognized tribes in the Lower 48. Many tribes across the country are still seeking federal recognition.
For decades the Alaskan native tribes have been excluded from the U.S. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 (IRGA), which grants casino gaming rights to tribes. The IRGA authorizes Class II gaming on reservation lands without approval of state or local governments.
Chin'an Gaming Hall
A major change began in Alaska on Feb. 3, 2025 when the federally-approved Chin'an Gaming Hall opened 20 miles north of Anchorage. This is a Class II casino approved by the U.S. Department of Interior under the terms of the IRGA. This historic opening may mark the beginning of a new era of casinos in Alaska.
Minimum gambling ages are 21 years old for casinos, 21 for poker and 19 for bingo.
Alaska has one Indian gaming facility authorized for Class II gaming by the U.S. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) and are regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC). There are no Class III casinos in Alaska offering House-banked slot machines and table games
