Juneau Gaming Hall Building Site
Construction of the Tlingit-Haida gaming hall has started on a 20-acre building site on Douglas Island. The area was cleared in 2018 and is now surrounded by "No Trespassing" signs and a construction warning sign at the entrance. Building materials and heavy equipment cover the area, and the structural framework is underway.
No details about the construction plan and its timeline have been released.
The location of the Tlingit-Haida gaming hall lies within the city and borough of Juneau but separated from mainland Juneau by the Gastineau Channel. The 20-acre site is west of downtown Juneau and east of Admiralty Island on Fish Creek Road not far from Eaglecrest Ski Area.

The U.S. Department of the Interior withdrew its decision last week that allowed tribes in Alaska to hold jurisdiction over Native allotments in the state. This action revoked last January's approval granted to the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes by the National Indian Gaming Commission to build a Class-II gaming hall on Douglas Island and will be reevaluated by the Interior Department.
Most Alaskan tribes do not have reservation-type land with sovereignty rights like tribes in the Lower 48 states. Instead, Alaskan tribes live on land allotments given to individual tribal members, which disqualifies federally-approved casinos under the U.S. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
"Tlingit & Haida is aware of the U.S. Department of the Interior action to withdraw the solicitor's decision. We also anticipated the action. We are reviewing internally and remain committed to exercising our Tribal sovereignty to preserve sovereignty, enhance economic and cultural resources and promote self-sufficiency and self-governance for Tribal citizens."
- Richard Peterson, Tlingit and Haida President
The tribe has already started construction of the Juneau gaming hall on Douglas Island. A spokesperson for the tribe declined to answer whether the construction is continuing.

The U.S. National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) has approved a plan by the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska to build a gaming hall on Douglas Island in Juneau. Details of the project are pending.
The federal approval allow the Tlingit-Haida Tribes to operated a Class II gaming facility on their land. Class II is player-vs-player gaming where jackpots are paid from a player pool. The games includ bingo-style slot machines, bingo and pull-tabs. There will be no Class III gaming, which is sometimes called Vegas-style gaming, and jackpots are paid by the house.
The Juneau gaming hall is only the second Alaskan facility approved by the National Indian Gaming Commission. The Eklutna Tribe received federal approval in Nov. 2023 to open the Chin'an Gaming Hall located 20 miles northeast of Anchorage near the Birchwood Airport. A temporary gambling facility opened at that site on February 3, 2025. A permanent casino will open in 2026.
