Nation | Tribe: Shoshone-Bannock Tribes
Mountain Home, Idaho
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are planning to build a casino in Mountain Home, Idaho, about 45 miles southwest of Boise. The tribes submitted an application for approval to the U.S. Department of Interior in June 2023. The process is very lengthy and could take a few years.
Shoshone-Bannock rendering of Mountain Home Casino
Mountain Home is the largest city (pop. 16,000) and the county seat of Elmore County, Idaho. The city is located along Interstate 84 about 45 miles southeast of Boise and 86 miles northwest of Twin Falls.
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are federally-recognized and headquartered on The Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The Shoshone-Bannock currently operate three casinos in southeastern Idaho: Shoshone-Bannock Casino Hotel in Fort Hall, Bannock Peak Casino in Arbon Valley, and Sage Hill Travel Center & Casino in Fort Hall.
The Shoshone-Bannock want to build a $311 million casino with 2,000 gaming machines, a hotel with 250 rooms, six food venues, a 15,000 square-foot event center, an 8-lane bowling alley, 2 movie theaters, and an entertainment arcade.
Proposed Mountain Home casino site owned by the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes.
The casino location would be on a 157-acre site east of Mountain Home off Interstate 84 near Exit 95. The tribe purchased the land in January 2020 for $1.5 million.

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes has applied to the U.S. Department of Interior to transfer 157 acres in Elmore County into federal trust for the purpose of building an Indian gaming casino. If approved, the casino will cost $311 million to build and feature 2,000 Class II slot machines, 6 dining options, a 260-room hotel, and an event center.

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have filed two applications with the Department of Interior. For the past year the DOI has been conducting an environment impact assessment of the proposed site located east of Mountain Home off Interstate 84 near Exit 95. The Tribes purchased the land in January 2020.
"These applications are a lengthy and complex process, as we have explained to the City of Mountain Home and Elmore County Officials in several meetings and conversations over this past year. While it may seem as if we are not making progress publicly on the project, that is not the case. There is a lot of behind the scenes work happening to meet the application requirements and continue the planning process for a project of this size."
- Alonzo Coby, Planning Director for Shoshone-Bannock Tribes
After the Department of Interior finishes tits environmental assessment, the Department will issue an opinion. If the opinion is favorable, an enviromental impact report will be issued and the public will have a 30-day period for comments. Afterwards, the Secretary of Interior will determine if the casino will have a detrimental effect on the local community. If not, the Secretary will approve the application. Then, the Idaho governor must agree to the casino since the building site is off-reservation land.

Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have completed a feasibility study, their business plan, and an economic impact study. An environmental impact study will be required.
The Shoshone-Paiute tribe from Duck Valley have also announced a competing proposal to build a Mountain Home casino. There is no information on its status at this time. The Shoshone-Bannock tribe has proposed a joint venture with the Shoshone-Paiute tribe. Meetings were held in late 2018, March 2019, and February 2020 without success.
