Indian Casinos and State-affiliated Casinos

Kansas has six Indian Casinos and four state-affiliated casinos.

Four Kansas tribes are formally recognized by the federal government. Each of these tribes has been granted authorization by the U.S. Interior Department to own and operate one casino in the state. A fifth tribe, the Wayandotte Nation of Oklahoma, has been granted two casino locations in Kansas.

See our Kansas Indian Casinos by Tribe page for information about these tribes and their casinos.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly held a ceremonial signing Monday for the state's new sports betting bill. After signing Gov. Kelly mentioned the state has begun a process to extend sports betting to all tribal casinos.

Tribal casinos interested in sports betting can submit a request to the Governor to negotiate the sports betting into their state-tribe gaming compacts. The Governor would then forward the negotiations to the Kansas Lottery Director, who would finalize the agreements with the tribes. Final review and approval would come for the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

2021 Sports Betting Hopes in Kansas

The 2021 Kansas legislature enters the year with another chance to pass sports wagering bill. The issue was debated last year before the legislative session was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legalized sports betting is supported by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and by key Republican lawmakers. The neighboring state of Missouri has three sports wagering bills ready to be introduced in its early legislative session, and Kansas would lose potential revenues if it does not act at the same time.

The year 2021 is positioned to be the year that Kansas approves sports betting.
