MASHPEE, MA - At a special town meeting in Mashpee last night, local residents approved a land deal regarding 140 acres of land owned by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. The deal was negotiated between town selectmen and the tribal council over the past year and a half and includes these key points:

  • The agreement puts 140 acres of land into federal trust with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
  • The tribe will not build a casino in Mashpee.
  • The tribe will make further claims to land owned by the town or private citizens.

The Mashpee Wampanoag have plans to build a resort casino in Middleborough and have submitted their application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review and approval.
