Colorado launched sports betting May 1

May 2, 2020

May 1 was the official kickoff date in Colorado for legalized sports betting as authorized by state voters last November.

With casinos currently closed in compliance with state's "safer-at-home" order, the only betting for the foreseeable future will be online. Colorado bettors can bet on UFC 249 and future major league sports teams.

In-person betting can be placed at any Colorado casino licensed for sports wagering after the COVID-19 closures are lifted. Initially there will be two licensed tribal casinos in Southwest Colorado and five commercial casinos in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek.

Players must be 21 or older to bet. Other rules and regulations are established by the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission, which requires a 10% tax paid to the state by sportsbook licensees.

Ute Mountain Casino will open sportsbook May 1

February 29, 2020

Ute Mountain Casino in Towao, Colorado can now legally begin operating a sportsbook beginning May 1, 2020.

The two state Indian casinos, Ute Mountain Casino and Sky Ute Casino, have gaming compacts with the state which allows both casinos to offer any state-licensed gambling. Under terms of these compacts, the tribes will be automatically authorized to operate sport betting after May 1 and do not need a state license. However, tribal sports betting will be restricted to reservations and prohibited from mobile betting.

Last week the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission granted its first sports-betting licenses to seven casinos, and in turn giving the Ute Mountain Casino and Sky Ute Casino authority to open sportsbooks May 1.

Ute Mountain Casino has announced plans to open a sportsbook on May 1. The casino is seeking an operations contractor which must be approved by the National Indian Gaming Commission.

Sky Ute Casino has not made any announcement to date regarding its plans.

Colorado voters approve sports betting

November 8, 2019

Sports Betting

On Tuesday Colorado became the 20th state to approve sports betting since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its ban in 2018. Voters narrowly passed Proposition DD, a ballot measure allowing the Colorado Division of Gaming to establish and regulate sports betting within the state. The vote was 50.71% to 49.29%.

First bets can be placed when Colorado launches its program on May 1, 2020 giving baseball fans the opportunity to bet on the Rockies vs. Phillies game that night. First bets are also expected on the Kentucky Derby scheduled the next day.

Bets will be placed in Colorado casinos or through mobile apps. Any of the state's casinos can apply to the Division of Gaming for a license to establish a physical sportsbook and an online betting app. Each casino will set its own limits.

Colorado will collect a 10% tax from the casinos on all sports betting revenues.

Christmas Casino & Inn opens in Cripple Creek

November 02, 2018

The newly opened Christmas Casino and Inn is located at the previous Big Jim's casino and Imperial Hotel property. It took nearly 6 months and $1 million to convert the former property over to the new casino.

Eight live reindeer are located at the casino parking lot. They will be there until January 1, 2019.

A 15-foot tall Christmas tree rotates on the inside of the building. A Christmas pyramid that is 17 feet tall with rotating scenes. 4,000 ornaments are on a 360-yard-long garland. Nutcrackers that are 9 feet tall. Plus 30 cuckoo clocks.

Lou Nasti is an artist that specialized in mechanical displays and has worked with Park Avenue Plaza and Macy's in New York. Nasti designed much of the decor for the casino.

The city will gain an additional 100 gaming devices with the new casino. This is one of the main ways that the city government earns money.

Bronco Billy's Casino plans $100 Million Expansion of Casino and Hotel

April 20, 2018

Last week approval was given by the Cripple Creek City Council for a new casino project. The project will develop the largest casino resort in the history of the area.

The project will cost over $100 million to complete the Bronco Billy's redevelopment and hotel.

During the meeting there were over 100 people attending. The room was standing room only. The project was approved by a vote of 4 to 0.

The hotel will have 200 guest rooms and be six stories tall. There will be space to host events and meetings. A fitness center and spa. A large parking garage. Crossways for pedestrians. New construction will consist of creating 300,000 square feet.

Maintaining the guidelines of the city's historical preservation will be given a certain amount of flexibility to allow for the large scale of the undertaking of the project. There were close to 20 conditions placed on the project in order to be approved.

Many visitors to the area consider the city a daytrip. The new casino resort is hopeful to change that thinking. The goal is to make it more of a destination where guests stay for a few days instead of a few hours.

The proposal had many in support during the meeting. Pushing for the project were owners of local businesses and community residents. Comments were made regarding the economic impact for the city from the over $100 million development.

Bronco Billy's casino is owned by Full House Resorts.

The building will be new construction. Opposed to the guidelines of restoring the buildings with a historical reference. However, the design will compliment and blend in with the surrounding area.
