The Downs Racetrack & Casino Hopes To Lease 100 New Slots

The Downs Racetrack & Casino is requesting to lease 100 slot machines. Those
machines are currently meant for the SunRay Park Casino.
On Friday the New Mexico Racing Commission will meet to discuss the request by
If approved, the The Downs will operate 700 machines.
The Downs is undergoing a renovation. Since the renovation, it has been closed.
However, it is scheduled to reopen in a few weeks.
Under current state law, race tracks that operate slot machines are allowed to
have 600 machines. The law also allows for the "racinos" to lease machines from
other gaming facilities that are not in use. The total amount allowed to be
leased are 150.
If the state's Racing Commission approves the plan then The Downs will pay the
SunRay to lease their slot machines. $695,000 will be paid for the first three
years. After that time The Downs will pay $330,000 a year for the following
seven years after that.
